The Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG) is built around the Centre for the Study of Geopolitics, Panjab University, Chandigarh and the University of Western Australia. A number of other collaborative nodes are being identified around the Indian Ocean Rim. In the Indian context, Panjab University is ranked very highly nationally and internationally. It has been awarded five star status by Peer Team of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), in recognition of exceptionally high research and teaching standards. In the Asia-Pacific context, the University of Western Australia is also ranked very highly.
TheCentre for the Study of Geopolitics is funded by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, under its Special Assistance Programme and by the Department of Ocean Development, Government of India, in recognition of high quality research carried out over the past decade and more on the Indian Ocean and Antarctica. The Centre, staffed by a number of research scholars, is located in Arts Block VI, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
At the University of Western Australia there has been an ongoing commitment to high quality research on the Indian Ocean region. The library, computing and cartographic expertise at UWA is of a very high quality. A number of important publications have emerged from this research including books and high quality atlases.
